Travel Tips

History and Setting:

El Arco at Land's End, Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas

In the late 1500's the bay fronting what is today Cabo San Lucas was a favorite hideout for English privateers, including Francis Drake and Thomas Cavendish, as they waited to jump the heavily laddened Spanish Galleons returning from Manila. Today, Cabo San Lucas and the greater Cabo area remains popular, although for different reasons. No doubt about it. Cabo San Lucas is now a resort area known to the rich and famous. It is also a place that all can enjoy.

Sun, blue sky, plentiful beaches, and the dramatic Lands End arch and rock formations are every bit as beautiful as advertised. Your ship will anchor in the Bahia San Lucas, with a front row seat on this spectacle. As you will be motoring in to the yacht harbor by launch, it is especially wise to get an early start today.

Once ashore you can be tempted in myriad directions. One inexpensive alternative is to hire a glass bottom boat for the short trip to Lovers Beach, the Arch, sea lions, diving areas, the Window on the Pacific, indeed to the very tip of Baja and the Pacific Ocean. Views from the boat also include some great framing of the bay, your ship, and the area.

Another option: walk past the inner harbor ring of resorts and restaurants into the town, bearing slightly to your left, and discover the town plaza (Zocalo). Amazingly, there you will likely find few tourists, a beautiful small open air church (a pleasure just to sit in), and the gem of the unassuming Museo de las Californias. Among other things, this museum contains maps and photos covering the last seventy years or so of change in the Baja Cape region, and the Cabo San Lucas in particular. Without giving away more, we can tell you it can be a deeply thought-provoking experience.

If you'd like to dive or fish, there are outfitters at the harbor. The fishing here (part of "Marlin Alley") is the equal of the best in Baja, which is definitely saying something.

Holland American also offers interesting tour alternatives. One of these, will take you to the north end of the "Cabos corridor", to the older city of San Jose del Cabo. Here you will find the open air elegance of older Mexico and Spain influence. A return trip via a cactus garden representing collections from Mexico adds to the tapestry of experiences of your day.

Besides the on-going opportunity in all these venues to meet and talk with locals, one may want to consider an exploration of some of the resorts in the area. They are destinations in themselves. A greater concentration of extraordinary venues would be hard to find elsewhere. Or perhaps you'd just like to locate yourself on one of the great beaches in the area, relax, and take in nature's beauty and those around you. Whatever you do, we sure you'll long remember your visit here.
